Capstone trim for 2024 Toyota Tacoma?

The Capstone trim was a pleasant surprise as a new top trim for the 3rd Gen Tundra. Do we think Toyota will bring that option to the 4th gen Tacoma?

It's almost certainly more than I'd want to pay but the thing I like is that it's not a silly cowboy trim. No offence to those who like that sort of thing, but why do all the fancy truck trims come with a giant belt buckle vibe? Just how many trucks can you sell to ranch owners?!

It's feeling like we're poised to see a huge step up in interior quality and (hopefully) a big improvement in ride quality. A Capstone Tacoma could be a smart move if Toyota has done enough to move the standard truck ahead in quality.

I think it should happen. Toyota already owns the midsize pickup segment and sales of the Tacoma are more than double what the Tundra does, so selling them shouldn't be a problem.

"The Tacoma is the little brother regarding size in this comparison, but in terms of sales, it destroys its big brother, the Tundra. To put it in perspective, in the third quarter of 2022, Toyota sold more than twice as many Tacomas (45,754) as Tundras (20,386)."
They've got two models in the TRD Pro and Trailhunter focused for off-roading/overlanding with a more rugged look. So it would make sense to me if they had a Capstone-like model to cater towards people who want a more luxurious truck with all the features.
So a fancier Limited trim? Sure why not.
Yeah that's basically it, which I don't think Toyota would have a problem selling if they offered it. I've seen a few Capstones in my area.
Does anyone in this space make a really fancy mid-sizer? The GMC Canyon Denali, I guess?

That'd be the closest because there highest Ranger trim is the Lariat (no platinum). Then there's something like the Rivian R1T, but that's something completely different.
With the TRD Pro and the Trailhunter I didn't think there was room for another premium Taco. But this discussion shows that even with premium offroad and overlanding versions, the new Tacoma still has room for a luxury model too.

Wow - it might be really tough to decide which one of those trucks to buy .

Cool.

Makes sense to me. It's the best selling midsize pickup and most pickups are driven on well paved roads. I'm sure many of those are open to a Tacoma that's more upscale. I just hope the wheels here don't look aftermarket like the ones on the Tundra.

I think ultimately a Capstone-like model for the Tacoma depends on how much is offered in the TRD and Trailhunter models. If one or both is decked out with tech then there won't be a need.
Capstone Tacoma seems kind of odd to me. It makes sense for a Tundra, Sequoia and 4Runner but I just don't see a luxury Tacoma as the right fit.

Although if people will buy it... I'm sure they'll sell it.

That what I was thinking, Capstone seems to be reserved for their higher end models. Highlander Capstone might be more likely.
It is definitely true that Toyota has always stayed away from any real luxury level Tacomas. They have always made their top Tacos mostly to increase their off road cred, which IMO is part of why they are so loved by those of us who don't just drive on asphalt. Even the most basic Taco has always been an offroad star, just with fewer toys.

Doesn't mean Toyota may not give a lux Taco a go, but it would be out of character for their best selling truck.

Why mess with success?

True.
Heck, just a new Tacoma gen in the Limited trim would be a major step up from what's currently offered, assuming it will take after the new Tundra. That being the case, they'll probably let Limited sales dwindle before dropping a Capstone, if it ever happens.
