Toyota engineers have been spotted driving two different Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickups, suggesting that work is underway for a potential Toyota electric pickup in the coming years.
The black F-150 Lightning Lariat was wearing Texas plates similar to those of other Toyota test vehicles, while the silver Lightning was wearing traditional Michigan “M” manufacturer plates. Both trucks were spotted entering and leaving Toyota’s Michigan Technical Center, and going on test runs.
Toyota has also been spotted doing similar work on the two Rivian R1T trucks over the last several months. Toyota’s EV truck plans are still unclear. The Lightnings would suggest that a full-size Tundra EV could be under consideration, while the Rivians might point to a smaller EV truck—similar to the Tacoma-sized EV mockup that was shown during Toyota’s EV Day blowout.
