Toyota has once again teased the reveal of the new Tacoma, but they did give us a piece of information. It's going to have the i-FORCE MAX hybrid technology that's used in the Tundra. Whether that's going to be in a four-cylinder engine and/or a V6 remains to be seen.

PLANO, Texas (April 4, 2023) – The best-selling midsize pick-up in America is all-new for 2024 with electrifying i-FORCE MAX performance.
Stay tuned for updates on the Tacoma’s incredible new design and features.

So is this supposed to be the same hybrid engine in the Tundra?

Pulled from another site

"Say goodbye to the V8; in its place is a 3.4-liter, twin-turbo V6 engine. In the Capstone—and indeed, in all the trucks we sampled in California—a motor/generator nestles in between the engine and 10-speed transmission, a hybrid powertrain Toyota dubs i-Force Max. This bundle produces 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. For those keeping score at home, yes, that just shades the 430-hp, 570-lb-ft F-150 hybrid."

That's pretty massive.

I assume it'll get the 10 speed auto then too...

So if that's the case the Tundra gets 19 mpg city / 24 mpg highway, so in a truck the size of the Tacoma hopefully that improves a bit. At least by a couple of MPG each you'd have to think. If it's a four-cylinder hybrid setup then those numbers would be way higher than what the Tundra gets in its V6.
I think it will be a four cylinder hybrid, with better performance and gas mileage than the V6 in the Tundra.

We can dream about a HP Taco with that Tundra V6 hybrid as an ultimate performance model. Now that would be fun.

Good point. I feel like Toyota is very cautious on its powertrains. So that made me think they'd re-use the hybrid V6 in the Tundra. But that does seem like a LOT of motor for a Tacoma.

Do they have a 4-cyl hybrid elsewhere? I guess the Prius/RAV4 etc... or does the Highlander have one?
They now have a turbo four cylinder in the Highlander, which might be a good match for the Taco. It produces 265 hp and 310 lb ft of torque. It could be retuned for truck use to make it a good base engine in the new Taco. The upgrade drivetrain might be that engine in a hybrid, which should outperform the current V6 and give it some solid power, like the hybrid V6 in the Tundra.
